My Next Job with Savannah Lacey
a little about me
I’m Savannah McLaughlin, I am 25 years old and I grew up in Redding, California.
I was home-schooled my whole life. My favorite subjects in school were the essay and writing assignments. I loved them so much, that when I became a teacher’s assistant in high school, I was asked to teach children creative writing. I have a passion for writing, because first, I love the English language, and secondly, because it allows me to clearly express my thoughts and ideas. I’ve grown to adopt the saying, “It’s not what you say, but how you say it.” Our words have an impact on society and if I can reach people in a careful but positive way, they are more susceptible to have an open mind to a topic they originally would be closed off to. Blogging has been a huge blessing because it allows me to reach out to even more people, because friends and family are spreading the word! Lastly, I love the creative aspect of writing, such as poetry and I’ve written and recited a few poems because it’s just such a beautiful form of writing and communicating.
my first few years working in hospitality
After I graduated high school, I attended Shasta College for 2 years where I became a certified line cook. At the same time I was going to school, I volunteered as an intern for a bakery. I was up at 4:00 am nearly every morning assisting the head baker loading the orders out for shipment. In the beginning, I was so sluggish and tired, that sometimes I accidentally put the wrong orders onto the wrong shipping carts and I would have to go back and fix my mistake. They had such patience with me! While I continue to love cooking and baking as a hobby, I decided I would switch over to the healthcare industry, and become a caregiver to the elderly.
combining healthy lifestyle choices with caregiving
I am always using the skills I learned in cooking and hospitality at home and at work. I recently moved to Corning, California where I endeavor to serve the elderly in need as a caregiver. I am a huge advocate for the health and well-being of people! This job allows me to offer nutritional meals and proper safety and sanitation to their houses. I offer them my hospitable services such as cooking and cleaning for them and making sure they are as comfortable as possible living in their own homes. It is very rewarding, seeing how appreciative they are at the end of the day. Indeed, one may call it a labor of love. It requires a lot of one on one personal time with the clients. I love that aspect of the job! My least favorite part of the job is the assistance in their medication. I know that this is what is helping keep them alive, but I wish there was more of a natural homeopathic approach to giving their bodies what they need to thrive. Again, I am a huge advocate for healthy living and I only want the very best for those I come in contact with.
getting started in writing and marketing
Since I am passionate about cooking and healthy lifestyle choices, and I want to start writing more, this year I started my own blog and I’m documenting my journey through a cookbook at the moment. What I would like to do in the next part of my career path is to become an influencer through my writing, whether that consists of blogging full time for a company, becoming a social media marketer, or writing in some way. It would be a dream to turn my passion for writing into a career. Through an even broader lens, becoming a photographer or an artist would also be exciting because I love to create. In fact, I am currently practicing my amateur photography skills through my blog, capturing pictures of food that I cook.
Because I have such an open mind and I am so willing to learn about any particular subject, I would enjoy putting my thoughts and ideas down in writing about anything and everything I would be instructed to write about by an employer.
the next steps on my work journey
I am excited to be a member of the Ox community and I am looking forward to treading down the path that this platform to help me get on a great job path will have in store for me! My long term goal someday, when I am brave enough to get in front of the camera and record myself, is to become a YouTuber. I am currently educating myself and learning all I need to know to become successful in that field of expertise. I find YouTube to be a very daunting challenge, which is why I want to practice and push myself out of my comfort zone.
I am looking forward to getting my foot in the door and taking steps to one day land my dream job. I have the goal to fully access my inner authentic self to inspire and create in all that I do, whether that’s writing, picture taking, blogging, or video recording. I want to fully immerse myself in the technical realm so I can reach out to the people around me to inspire, create, and imagine a better world into existence.
